People should not talk on their phone while they are using a public restroom.

Cree's Birthday

Birthdays are a very big deal in the house Cockriel household, so I tried to make Cree's a big deal.

First I called Cree's middle school and asked the secretary to make an announcement over the intercom. She said of coarse...but when cree got home after work he said she must have forgotten. I didn't let this get me down.

For dinner, Cree decided that he wanted to go to Sammy's for his birthday dinner. Burgers, fries and pie shakes....always a treat.

Next we went to my apartment for pin the mustache on cree, cake, and some other slightly embarrassing yet fun birthday games.

After the festivities, we went to see Flash of Genius at the dollar movie.

For his birthday I made him an Idaho for Obama t-shirt, personalized a national park passport and bought him the 3rd and 4th season of Saved by the Bell...one of his favorites.

Quite an enjoyable birthday.....

My intent was to use these photographs for a project about our conformity to the man. It kinda fell through....and I got bored of it. Now I have a new topic and some really great photo booth pictures.

I did it! I, Amanda Jane Cockriel, deactivated my facebook account. In a moment of frustration yesterday morning, as I was swamped with homework...and wasting my precious time stocking random people I haven't seen in five years on facebook. I felt quite silly...and consequently chose to quit facebook. Since yesterday morning, I've counted the number of times I have typed in www.facebook.com. Nine times. Nine times I subconsciously typed in the web address, pressed enter, then sighed in frustration as I realize I couldn't get my ten minute facebook break/fix. It's a horrible habit...and a waste of time.

Keep your fingers crossed that I'm not back in three days.
I honestly don't know if I have the self control, but i'll try.

one of my projects.

I designed these last winter in one of my packaging design classes.  It was a fun project, and I was very happy with the way they came out. Krystall is a swedish drink, so I tried to keep the design clean and smart like more design from those fantastically Scandinavian countries.  Here is the link to the original design for Kristall which I tried to improve upon.

i miss new york.

It hit me today. I miss New York.
For my 311 English class, we get to write in a journal everyday.  I made it my goal to write down all my NYC memories.  It has proven to be a more difficult task than initially expected.  I wish so much I would have been a dedicated journal writer while there.  I am already forgetting and that makes me sad.  I've said all along that this was the summer I'd never forget.  Little did I know just how easy it was.
As I was thinking about new york, I got to pondering my future.  I am graduating soon.  This means I'm gonna have to grow up and get a grown up job. Lucky me.  Honestly, the thought kind of scares me.  I loved new york and would love to go back while I can...but another part of me wants to explore other cities.  When I was looking for my internship this past summer, I sent my portfolio all over.  Consequently, I received offers to intern in places other than new york, but of course I chose new york.  I've decided I am going to keep my mind open and be excited about anything that comes my way...no matter where it is.  It's weird to think I'll be somewhere other than here a year from now....I just don't know where that somewhere other than here is.

another book.

After reading Jonathan Safran Foer's second book, I opted to read the first. Honestly...I didn't like it quite as much as the second. It was a little more risque and I didn't enjoy reading it as much as Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. I love the cover though. I borrowed my copy from my friend Brigham Barnes. His copy was blue and orange...if I remember right (I should because i forgot to give it to him after finishing it for a whole month later. ooops.) Swell idea to have all different colors. Nifty.

I heart national parks.

This weekend in an attempt to get out a dodge and do something fun, cree and I decided to go up to Idaho and enjoy the wonders it has to offer. Since I've yet to see just how great Idaho apparently it, he made it the goal of the weekend to change my opinion. We drove up Friday to catch the Burley High-school football game. Anyone who knows me, knows what kind of football fan I am...and by that I mean what kind of football fan i am not. I made it through alive...so all is well.
Saturday, we started early. I being the space cadet that I am, forgot my tennis shoes for our day of outdoor adventure and consequently had to borrow some of Cree's mama's shoes....grey with big shiny reflector swishes down the sides...just so people wouldn't run over me. Honestly, I've never thought about it before, but it is quite smart and i think Sister Jones has inspired me to invest in a pair. The first visit was at Lake Cleveland...a darling lake up in the mountains outside Burley. It was quite picturesque. I wish my camera could capture just how pretty it was. After skipping rocks for a bit, and by skipping i mean plopping (I have yet to master the art...cree on the other hand was quite good) we made our way to the lookout which was high enough you could see most of Burley and the neighboring towns. Next we made our way to the Outpost...a small town diner where we were served great burgers and the biggest french fries I've ever seen. It took an hour to get our food...but I guess that just comes with the small town charm. After lunch, we went to get my national park stamp for my passport. To my surprise, the California trail had a stamp as well! so I got two for my delightful little book. Next we went to the City of Rocks national reserve and climbed the Bath Tub Rock. It was fantastic. Kind of scared me to death...but I made it and all is well. The wind was blowing so hard once we reached the top that I thought for sure someone was going to blow off.
By this point we were pretty tuckered out (that's small town talk...also you need to call your parents folks...just fyi)so we decided to venture over to the natural hot springs. Mmmmmhmmmm. Perfect ending to our Idaho outdoor adventure. As of being convinced of its loveliness? I was.

one more thing.

i miss mackenzie sasser.

i'm starting a new blogging leaf...
by trying to be a bit more consistent.
well, i'm back from new york.
in provo...going to school, working at the library, living above a boutique, having fun with cree, enjoying the mountains, taking pictures, reading lots of books...about vampires (yes, i have been sucked into the twilight phenomenon), and listening to lots of jazz.
and so begins my new blogging leaf.

i have a huge test to take at four.  i am very unprepared for it...and yet, i decided now would be the time to blog...i think i subconsciously had ulterior motives.
so with that said, i'm going to post a picture...and call it quits til the next time i feel so inclined.

subway entertainment

During my 30 minute commute between jersey city and soho (prince & broadway to be exact), I've decided to read everyday rather than listen to my ipod.  Plus the woman I sublet from has hundreds of books stashed in our apartment...I figured I might as well take advantage of the situation and seize the day.  I began by reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.  What a writer.  I was captivated from the beginning. He has a way of twisting your heart and your head simultaneously in ways they aren't normally twisted, which sounds unusual but true.  I don't know how else to put it. The book is extremely powerful and moving in a very creative way.  I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.  I was dissapointed to finish it and wished it had been longer.

The next book I read was The Picture of Dorian Gray.  I had never read it, and considering it is a classic, I decided it was about time.  Again, a very enjoyable read....quite sad, but still enjoyable.  It really makes you contemplate what you value in life and the importance of it.

Yay for summer of subway reading!

New York City Ballet

Last week a friend had an extra ticket to see the New York City Ballet! I was so excited.  What a opportunity.  It was breath taking...so grateful that I got to go.

The program was designed very nicely as well....

my mama and dad...and brothers...and grandparents wanted to see where I live in jersey city. So here is my apartment!(literally step by step)

Yesterday some lovely friends and i enjoyed a swell afternoon of croquet and jump rope in the park. It was delightful in every possible way.

Such a neat exhibit.  Some friends and I wandered down to South Ferry to head out to Govenor's Island for too watch Ralph Lauren's polo team for free.....  Sadly, the rain closed the ferry, but we stumbled upon this delightful exhibit.  Each piano key is attached to different appliances all around the room,so when played the room filled with awkward/pleasant noises.  Quite an experience.

Well, I have been in New York for about a month.  It is quite fun. I am interning at mucca design and loving it.  I must say though, so far I have been extremely shy.  They are just all so good. I am working on book covers...which is swell.  I'm just happy to be out here in New York.  Yesterday I went sunbathing in central park....that was sorta surreal.....

these are delightful.

i heart KC.

So before I head New York, I've decided to spend some quality time with the fam in Kansas City.
Yesterday, my brothers challenged me to a game of HORSE. I received all letters and was out of the game before either one of them received an H.
They both felt so guilty for being excellent at basketball that they kept giving me hugs and telling me that if they ever needed me to design a box for the basketball....I'd be the first one they would call.
